Apple to Make Solar Powered iPhones?

Apple has long been considered an innovative technology company for obvious reasons. There are rumors out now that Apple may be planning solar powered iPhones!

Your first response to this might be “So, what?” Well, it is true that you can buy small, mobile solar panels to power up electronic gadgets ranging from laptops to whatever. The information surrounding the solar powered iPhone is different. The solar aspect would not be separate. It would be embedded!

The rumors started flying not from the solar industry, but from a group that watches out for significant Apple public filings. Specifically, patent filings. The group has a site called patentlyapple.com. It was looking through new patent filings and saw that Apple had made the filing.

So, what are we talking about here? It isn’t entirely clear. What the patent application describes is a glass surface on the phone that would incorporate solar panels. The most recent iPhone came in one prototype that had a glass back panel. The general belief is Apple might try to incorporate the solar panels in both the front and back. That way, your phone would charge whenever the sun hit it. Pretty swank, eh?!

A quick word of caution before you rush out to buy one. They aren’t on the market now and they probably will not be any time soon. In fact, a patent application doesn’t really mean much. Most technology companies file thousands of them a year. Of these, most go unused until a much later date, if at all. In short, this may be much excitement about nothing.

Now that the proverbial “cautionary word” verbiage is out of the way, I just want to say I am already saving for my solar powered iPhone! I only hope they’ve dropped AT&T by then!
