Cars Starting To Get Solar Panel Roofs
The idea of a solar powered car has been an ideal for a very long time. While it isn’t here yet, cars are starting to get solar powered roofs that hint at an interesting future. As a society, we have the attention span of a gnat. We expect things to happen now and progress in technology to happen in one big bang. The internet is now an integral part of our lives, but keep in mind you were probably using a slow dial up modem only five or seven years ago to access it.

The idea of a solar car is sort of the Holy Grail of renewable energy. Think about it. We would take a huge part of the pollution problem and convert it into a clean energy product. The demand for oil would plummet and so would conflict in areas where it is found [Iraq…cough, cough]. The problem, however, is the technology for a solar powered car is simply infantile. The good news is we are starting to see advancements in this area.
The idea of incorporating solar power into cars has gone mainstream. Companies like Audi, Toyota, Fiat and Volkswagen area all now starting to incorporate solar systems into the roofs of their cars. Unfortunately, these systems are not designed to propel the car. They are instead used to run the accessories in the car such as air conditioning, radios and so on. Since fuel is not required to generate the necessary electrical currents, the cars get 10 to 20 percent better fuel mileage.

Let’s be honest. The solar roof car has been created because there is a perceived market for it. This may sound crass at first, but it is not. Consumers drive markets. The fact we are seeing these small solar system incorporated into cars may appear to be a small development, but it is actually huge. Why? It is making solar power a part of the argument in the halls of the big car companies. You just know there are engineers trying to come up with a viable solar car for the mass market.
Will we see a solar powered car soon? Unlikely, but we continue to move in that direction. As technology improves, the future may be so bright that we have to drive in it!
