Solar Energy Stocks

Solar energy is considered one of the cleanest energy sources available to us, but that doesn't mean it can't be a source of wealth building as solar energy stocks show.

Want to make yourself sick? Pull up a chart of some huge company and look at the historical stock price. The classic example is Microsoft. Whatever you may think about the company, it once traded at a few dollars. Through the years it grew in value and went through tons of stock splits. Even the original secretaries at the company who were given stock are worth millions at this point.

Ah, if only we could have seen into the future and purchased some of that stock! Well, perhaps now you can do just that. The energy market is in the middle of a major restructuring. The oil companies are consolidating and under pressure as “easy oil” becomes harder to find. In contrast, there are a host of green companies that are now being publicly traded and that means solar energy stocks are hot.

As with any niche of stocks, there are some companies that are going to do well and some that are going to fade. The question is trying to figure out which is which. There are thousands of brokers and websites devoted to that subject, so I’ll leave it to you since I tend to buy high and sell low! Still, this is one area where the new Microsoft or Google could be coming from. Why? Simple math.

Solar energy is becoming a bigger part of the energy prize because fossil fuels are not renewable. Once they are used, they are used. The world currently uses between 82 and 84.5 million barrels of oil a day. It currently produces about 84.5 million. The vast majority of big oil fields are now in decline, which means that forecasts of additional production increases are murky at best. Demand, however, will continue to rise as China, India and other countries start needing more energy.

All of this is going to create a shortfall when it comes to energy. How will countries fill it? Well, consider the fact the Obama Administration is now offering guaranteed loans for nuclear power plant development. While it would be nice to think solar will fill the gap, the truth is there will be a number of different energy platforms used to pick up the slack.

So, what does all this mean? It means that solar energy will be a growing business field for the foreseeable future. With more and more demand, solar energy stocks should be positioned to grow for decades. That makes them a good investment.
