Solar Cross

Solar power has branched out into a lot of practical uses. The solar cross is one way to remember a person who has passed on in a unique way.

Solar Cross

It’s human nature to want to remember and honor our dead or to commemorate events we deem as holy. Now there is a tasteful way to do so that uses sustainable and renewable energy and requires little maintenance. The solar cross utilizes a small photovoltaic panel to harness the sun’s energy in order to light up a memorial cross. These can be placed at graveside, at the site of accidents, or anywhere deemed significant to those purchasing the solar cross.

Solar crosses come with rechargeable batteries that are charged via the solar energy generated from a small photovoltaic panel on the back of the cross. These batteries keep the cross glowing throughout the night. The solar power system is designed for outdoor use. It can handle temperatures ranging from -10°F to 140°F. Most systems are water resistant, but should not be submerged in water. The biggest maintenance issue has been damage done to the crosses by maintenance crews at cemeteries. Solar crosses come with a stake for ground mounting or can be placed in a vase; the latter option has been found to decrease damage. The solar cross requires no set up beyond testing whether the batteries need a full charge before using them.

Solar crosses are readily available in a variety of styles. The most common variety is the gleaming white cross. These can be bought in sizes ranging from 1 foot to over 6 feet. Because the solar panel is small and on the back of the cross, the gleaming white crosses seem to be untouched by the need for power. Another alternative is a small-lighted box with a cross or religious symbol cut out. There are also white angels that can be lit using solar power.

Both the cross and the eternal lights have long been used by Christians to honor their dead. Traditional eternal lights needed constant maintenance to make sure the candles were burning. The solar version takes away the need the vigilance, providing people with comfort even if they can’t be physically nearby. The solar cross has been a particularly popular item among the families of fallen soldiers.

While other secular solar figures exist, like decorations and yellow ribbons, this phenomena has not crossed into other religions. For instance, you can’t find Judaica or Muslim solar products. But it is expected that the ease of use with the solar cross, and the relatively inexpensive cost, will yield future solar decorations, both secular and religious.
