Solar Powered Water Heaters

The first use of solar power by mankind was to heat water. With over a hundred years of use, solar powered water heaters have come a long way.

Solar Powered Water Heaters

When people think of solar power, they almost always think of solar panel systems. Statistics show, however, that solar powered water heaters are by far the most used solar technology. It is believed that more than 1.5 million homes and commercial structures use solar powered water heaters or systems.

One of the biggest advantages of solar power water heaters is the cost. A relatively small panel system is needed, which means the total cost including installation can be as low as $1,300. With expected life spans of over 20 years, the upfront cost is recovered ten fold in savings on utility bills not to mention the positive effect on the environment.

With a hundred year history, solar water heaters come in a wide variety of forms now. You can choose from any of the brands so long as they have certain characteristics. Most important, the heater should be certified by the Solar Rating and Certification Program or the Florida Solar Energy Center.

As to the heaters themselves, you have two basic options. Solar water heaters are known as collectors, and come in flat plate and batch platforms.

A flat plate solar water heater is a flat panel that sits in a sun drenched area. The panel has water or an artificial liquid running through it. The panel distributes heat throughout the panel and warms the water. Water systems are deposited directly into a repository while artificial fluids are used similar to a geothermal system wherein the run through water pipes and heat the water.

A batch collector is a tank with a glass cover. The tank is typically black, heavily insulated and has a glass top. The sunlight heats the water through the glass. The water is then transferred to the home through pipes.

Your probably wondering how you control the water temperature with either of these systems. There are two answers. First, you can use the water to pre-heat water in a regular heater. Second, you can use a controller to manipulate the temperature of the water coming out of the faucet. The controller will mix in cold water to prevent you from being scorched.

Solar powered water heaters come in all forms and types. The best way to make a selection is to simply start looking at them. You can try the links on the top of this page or your local solar vendor.
