Wind power is a very popular alternative energy platform. Now, it is about to become popular on a huge scale with development in atmospheric wind power technology.

What is the biggest problem with wind energy? The answer is simple. The wind doesn’t always blow. When it isn’t, the turbines aren’t turning and electricity is not being produced. This leads to a secondary problem. Most wind farms have to be placed in areas where the wind is most consistent, which is usually along the coast. Atmospheric wind power is a new approach to the game. It takes the wind turbine off the ground and up in the air. The basic idea is to create a device that looks somewhat like a long kite. The kite has turbine blades on the struts running across the device. As wind passes through the device, it spins the turbines. The energy created is then sent down a physical line to the ground where it is fed into a grid system and used.

The beauty of this approach is the power potential. Wind is much more consistent at the elevations being discussed [2,000 feet]. It is also much stronger, which means that the devices can produce massive amounts of energy. The inventor of the device, JoeBen Bevirt, notes there are in excess of 870 terrawatts of energy in the wind circulating the planet at high elevation and the world energy demand is only 17 terrawatts each year. The potential is obviously massive.

So, why hasn’t this idea ever been investigated before? Well, it has. The idea has been around since the 1970s. It never went anywhere because there simply hasn’t been the technology to make it happen. Now there is. Computer control of the device is possible. There are now materials that are light enough and strong enough to make the device possible.
