George Bush Claims Wind Power Legacy

In one of the odder political U-turns, former President George W. Bush has come out touting his role in introducing wind power to the nation when he was President.

To say that George W. Bush was a controversial President is a minor understatement. Whatever your view of him, the one thing most can agree on is that he picked his position and then stuck with it through thick and thin. Sometimes this was a positive thing. Sometimes it was not. This simple fact, however, makes his new claims on wind power all the odder.

President Bush spoke at a Wind Power 2010 convention in Texas this past May. He was very humorous, but made some very interesting claims. One was that his legacy should include credit for jump starting wind power as a viable alternative energy source in the United States.

This claim has met with some serious baffled look from environmentalist and clean energy proponents. The Bush Administration was typically known for just the opposite views. It worked hard to debunk any climate change theories and spent a good bit of political capital deregulating the energy industry. It also provided miniscule amounts of funding to renewable energy research and started a war in Iraq that had oil security as part of its goal.

In truth, President Bush is a fan of renewable energy in his personal and pre-Washington life. As has been reported ad nauseum, his ranch is very clean energy oriented. It uses geothermal energy and collects rainwater. Politically, he should also be credited with helping launch wind power on a large scale in Texas, which leads the nation now in megawatts produced by wind energy.

I always find politicians to be so much more appealing after they leave office. Being stripped of the artificial views they must uphold in the political brawl known as politics almost makes them seem human, the type of person we could all get to know. Perhaps one day we will see politics turn away from the vicious right versus left mentality to something that is more congenial.
