Why States Love Wind Power

States are leading the way on renewable energy. In this article, we take a look at why states seem to love wind power above all other renewable energy platforms.

The allure of renewable energy has many facets. There is the environmental facet of clean energy that does not produce greenhouse gases. There is also the national security issue of not being reliant on energy resources found primarily in countries that are hostile to our interests. Finally, there is the economic aspect of not sending money abroad to pay for fossil fuels, a drain on our wealth.

The states, of course, pay mostly lip service to the above reasons. They are much more interested in another aspect of the renewable energy boom – jobs. The creation of new renewable energy platforms creates jobs and plenty of them. There is the initial design and construction process. After this, maintenance and improvements are constantly needed. Combined, they make up a nice job bank for many areas that have seen massive job losses.

That being said, not all forms of renewable energy are the same when it comes to the job issue. Wind power is clearly the version that creates the most jobs. Why? Well, there is a need for maintenance on a fairly large scale. By definition, wind towers are comprised of moving parts. Moving parts break. They need replacing. They need maintenance. All of this requires people.

The other popular renewable energy platforms are fairly passive. Solar is time intensive to set up, but three to five people can run a plant once that is done. Geothermal is similar. Biomass has some human requirements, but has fallen out of favor since it is one of the messiest and least efficient forms of renewable energy around.

Jobs are a huge issue when it comes to local politics. Low unemployment rates tend to make for happy voters. Given this, you can expect to see more wind power projects popping up as we move forward this year.
